Mercedes Benz targets 0.20Cd drag coefficient in next five years

Sometimes, making cars more efficient is best done through the application of more fundamental principles such as improved aerodynamics, rather than complex and expensive powertrain upgrades. With pressure to build greener cars, manufacturers are again focusing on aerodynamics to save fuel and Mercedes believes there is still a lot more to learn.

Mercedes Benz is embracing that philosophy, with a plan to bring the respective drag coefficients of its cars below 0.20Cd within the next five years.

The carmaker claims it already produces the world's most aerodynamic production car - the new 2010 E-Class Coupe, which scores a drag coefficient figure of 0.24Cd. The new coupe even manages to out-slip the new 2010 Toyota Prius, which for a short time in January could claim it was the world's most aerodynamic production car along with the Honda Insight at 0.25Cd.

However, despite the E-Class Coupe already posting impressive aerodynamic credentials, Mercedes is keen to improve in this area. Speaking with Autocar, E-Class Coupe project manager Rainer Tiefenbacher revealed that there was “still plenty more to come” in terms of improving fuel efficiency.

“There are big steps to be made, especially around and under the engine hood. Twenty years ago we celebrated a 0.30Cd, in five years we will reach the next big step,” Tiefenbacher explained.

Mercedes is correct in that area - the current shape of most cars and trucks make them relatively poor aerodynamic performers. But while carmakers continue to extract as much efficiency out of their cars, we hope aesthetics don't get laid completely by the wayside.

April time-spending and some sketch development advice-asking

It's been awhile since I made my last post. Well, I've got some reasons for that. The main reason's that I've been settling down in Tokyo. I finally moved into my apartment (which's situated in Takanawa district with Shirokanedai across the street & has got an awesome view!) and installed all the furniture already!..
Starting from the 29th of April the Golden week started! This means no work and just holidays up to 6th of May!!! "Spare time!", I thought. "Maybe some sketchin'!!!" The answer was "no!", because one of my best friends Andrey Gusev (http://carcreator.blogspot.com/) came to visit me to Tokyo from Nagoya for the whole Golden week... So it turnes out that we live some kind of "european-time-life" wakin' up at 16.00 and going to sleep at around 7.00. Tokyo night life's pretty intense, I should say!!!
:-)))
Obviously there's no time for sketchin', as you can imagine!..

Well, that's not the point of this post, actually!.. The point is the sketch I did in February of a small Alfa. I completely forgot about that and found it in my computer recently.
So I actually want to know yours, guys, opinion,- do you thing it's worth making Photoshop sketches out of that or should it remain as just pencil doodles?!!
;-P

Mercedes Benz announces pricing for 2010 E-Class Coupe and Sedan

Mercedes-Benz used to be able to charge whatever it wanted for its luxury cars because, well, it could. But times have clearly changed, with formidable competition coming not just from BMW, Audi, and Cadillac, but also from Lexus, Infiniti, and even Hyundai’s compelling Genesis.

In what may prove to be a major blow for the BMW 3-Series Coupe and Audi A5, the upcoming Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe will actually cost less than the E-Class Sedan on which it is based. Despite the new Coupe’s predecessor - the CLK - costing thousands of dollars more than the E-Class Sedan in most markets - the U.S. being a notable exception - this differential will no longer exist for the latest breed of E-Class variants.

The sedan itself is competitively priced as well, starting at $4,600 below the previous model's base price. The entry model, the 2010 E350, will start at $49,475, while at the other end of the spectrum, the V8-powered E550 will start at $57,175. The Coupe starts at a mere $48,925 for the E350 model, while the E550 kicks off at $55,525.

Earlier reports had hinted that the prices would be the same, or similar, because the E-Class Coupe shares most of its equipment and powertrain packages with the Sedan. While coupe and convertible models traditionally attract a price premium over sedan siblings, Mercedes appears to be attempting a new, aggressive pricing strategy to really hit its competition hard.

The CLK was always positioned slightly above the BMW 3-Series Coupe and Audi A5 and the new E-Class Coupe is no different. It won’t help that the new Mercedes two-door is not only cheaper, but also one of the best luxury coupes we’ve seen in a while, and is easily the pick of the bunch next to its rivals.

Sales of the new E-Class Sedan and Coupe will start in June, but that’s not the end of the story. At September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Mercedes will unveil the new E-Class Cabrio as well as the E-Class Estate wagon, but both of these models will almost certainly attract a price premium over the Sedan.

Pricing for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and E350 BlueTec diesel models will not be announced until a later date.

Lotus reveals new photos of Evora ahead of June launch

The wraps first came off the Lotus Evora 2+2 GT back in July 2008 but despite the car looking production-ready Lotus engineers had plenty of fine tuning to complete before the car could finally go on sale. Then, almost nine months later, Lotus finally confirmed the production specifications for the Evora and announced a launch date for this May. That date got bumped to June, but the car is finally on its way - for Europe at least.

To ramp up excitement for the launch, Lotus has released a new set of images of the Evora, revealing the interior and several new exterior shots. The Evora will go on sale in Europe this June as a 2010 model with a starting price of €50,412 for the basic two-seater model. Opt for the 2+2 seating configuration and buyers will have to pay an additional €3,000.

No word on a U.S. launch has been announced yet but already some big name celebrities, both here and abroad, have announced interest in it. On the list are Jay Leno, Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, London Mayor Boris Johnson, musician Jay Kay, Richard Hammond and James May, Beyoncé, Dave Grohl, George Clooney, Kevin Spacey and Patrick Dempsey - to name just a few.

To kick off the sales launch, Lotus will be releasing a special version built in a limited run of just 450 cars. Called the ‘Lotus Evora Launch Edition’, the special version will be available in either Ardent Red or British Racing Green, and come with 2+2 seating, silver cast alloy wheels, an Alpine stereo, bi-xenon headlights and a reversing camera as standard.

The final specs for the car include a 3.5L petrol V6 producing 276hp (206kW) and 252lb-ft (342Nm) of torque. Straight line performance is impressive, with the zero to 100 km/h sprint taking place in just over 5 seconds with a top speed of over 260km/h. Official fuel economy figures for Europe are 19mpg (12.4L/100km) in the city and 36mpg (6.5L/100km) on the highway.

Standard features include a six-speed manual transmission, optimal shift time indicator, Bilstein dampers, 18in wheels up front and 19in wheels in the rear, a Bosch electronic differential lock, twin airbags, four-piston AP racing brakes, 350mm ventilated discs, halogen headlights, Recaro leather seats, aluminum trim, and an Alpine stereo.

Optional goodies include a 7in touchscreen display with satellite navigation, Bluetooth and USB connection, rear parking sensors and a camera, a titanium sports exhaust tailpipe, an engine oil cooler, a sports diffuser and an engine pack with enhanced throttle response.

Hennessey upgrades Cadillac CTS-V to ZR1 spec

Texas-based tuning firm Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE) has announced plans for several highly modified Cadillac CTS-V sedans that the company plans to launch later this year. Dubbed the ‘V’ series, the uprated cars will offer outputs from 610hp (455kW) all the way up to 800hp (595kW) and joins other mega-power custom cars like the recently launched ‘Godzilla 700’ Nissan GT-R and a string of ‘Venom’ Dodge Vipers.

At the heart of tuned Cadillacs is GM's new 6.2L LSA supercharged V8, which in standard trim already outputs a healthy 556hp (414kW). Add a K&N sports air filter, upgraded supercharger pulley and belt, and revised ECU, and the powerplant churns out 610hp (455kW) and 605lb-ft (820Nm) of torque for the basic V600 package. Hennessey claims a 0-60mph time of just 3.7 seconds, an 11.8 second quarter mile ET and a top speed of 195mph.

Next in line is a series of upgrades delivering 650hp (485kW) and 700hp, respectively. Additional modifications necessary for the power hike includes a new cold air induction system, new camshafts, stainless steel headers and a full 3in exhaust, and an intercooler upgrades. Expect to see the 0-60mph time drop to around 3.1 seconds when fitted with these upgrades plus 20in wheels shod with Nitto drag radial tires.

Rounding out the range is the V800 twin-turbo upgrade delivering a supercar-rivalling 800hp (595kW) and 780lb-ft (1,056Nm) of torque. Some of the extra modifications include a custom twin-turbo set-up with external wastegates, blow-off-valves and a fuel delivery system upgrade.

First Drive: Classic Design Concepts Group 2 Widebody Challenger

CDC Group 2 Widebody Challenger

The Challenger SRT8 marked the official return last year of the musclecar to the Dodge lineup, and its retro styling, 425-horsepower V8 and tire-shredding capabilities had Mopar enthusiasts giddy with excitement. What, you say, could be much better? Enter Classic Design Concepts. The Novi, Michigan-based company has been adding its visual touch to cars since 1990, and recently tried its hand at Dodge's new musclecar. The result? The Group 2 Widebody Challenger that made its debut at SEMA in 2008. We were instantly smitten with the car's aggressive appearance on the show floor, and were determined to get a closer look if we ever had the chance. Jumping forward a couple of months, we recently learned that the car would be out in Southern California for a Mopar gathering. A phone call to CDC later and we were fortunate enough to land an afternoon behind the wheel of this 575-horsepower bona fide modern musclecar.

First off, let's get one thing straight: Classic Design Concepts isn't your typical body kit manufacturer. The fit and finish on all of its products is at or above OE quality, which is why companies like Ford, Saleen and Roush have relied on CDC to supply parts for their cars. Remember that cool functional hood scoop on the Mach 1 Mustang built in 2003? It was designed and built by Classic Design Concepts. All products also come with their own three-year warranty on manufacturer defects.

You might wonder – as did we – why they don't build and sell a complete car of their own. We asked, and were told that CDC prefers to simply provide components and let customers create cars for themselves. Even so, the Group 2 Challenger has the look of a production car and we could easily picture it on a showroom floor.

Just like the stock Challenger, the Group 2 Widebody gets inspiration from Mopar models past. The overall theme of the car comes from a variety of 1970's Chrysler road racers, including five Hemi Cuda race cars that were campaigned by Chrysler of France from 1970 to 1973, and more famously, by the Challenger T/A driven by Sam Posey in the 1970 Trans-Am season. Each competed in a Group 2 classification – the Cudas in FIA and the Challenger T/A in SCCA, hence the name. Other visual cues, like the rear quarter panel extensions, have a direct link to the 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda.
So, just what is included in the Group 2 package? For starters, new composite front fenders, left and right spoiler canards (side wings) and rear "billboard" panel and fenderwell extensions. In total, the new body panels add six inches to the width of the Challenger. Not only does it look awesome, but it's functional too. The car can now accommodate 11.5-inch wide wheels at the rear and 10-inch wide wheels up front, enabling better grip for acceleration and cornering. Customers can purchase the package with USW 20-inch three-piece wheels and Pirelli PZero Rosso tires or find their own combination. Other options from Classic Design Concepts include a stainless steel wire mesh grille, sequential taillights and a fully functional shaker hood system, a CDC specialty.

This particular Challenger also has a few additional components not sold directly by Classic Design Concepts. Under the hood is a Vortech supercharger system that works in conjunction with the shaker hood system to boost the Hemi V8 to 575 horsepower, and out back, a Corsa exhaust system ensures a true muscle car sound emits from the tailpipes. Lastly, a KW coilover suspension system helps reduce body roll and improve handling, and a Baer drilled-and-slotted big brake upgrade provides additional stopping power.

While it's hard for a photograph to convey, the width of the CDC Group 2 Challenger is nothing short of impressive in person. The new fenders give the Challenger bold and beautiful curves at nearly every angle, and the difference is especially noticeable when juxtaposed with a stock Dodge Challenger. Although it barely seems possible, the Group 2 actually manages to make the standard production car look wimpy. In fact, we began to notice a growing trend as we spent more time with the car; everything that the stock Dodge Challenger embodies, the CDC Group 2 does so even more. If the Challenger reminds you of the muscle car era, the Group 2 makes you feel like you're actually there. Think driving around in Challenger SRT8 attracts attention? Try it in this bad boy. Parked at a gas station, we had people appear out of nowhere to come inspect the car. The Group 2 seems to be universally loved by car enthusiasts. Everyone from a Ford Mustang GT owner to a 20-something in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo pulled over to have a look at the car.

And then there is the experience of actually driving the CDC Group 2 Challenger. We can't think of another modern vehicle that makes you feel this much like you're behind the wheel of a true take-no-prisoners muscle car. Mash the throttle and the Group 2 explodes off the line with tires howling and the tail wagging as the car fights for traction in spectacular muscle car fashion. It doesn't feel supercar fast – most likely because of its size – but just a few seconds on the gas and you'll be well past the legal speed limit. The only thing we'd change is the automatic transmission, and fortunately, Chrysler is now offering a six-speed manual for the Challenger. Check that option in the box, and we'd take this car as-is, no changes needed.

So what's the downside? Well, the Group 2 package is a wee bit expensive. All of the body components are $11,995 installed, or $5,895 not including wheels and tires. The shaker system, including the composite flat hood, adds another $2,495. So just to get the full look of this car, you're looking at nearly $14,500. To build this exact car, you'd also have to spend $6,400 (Vortech supercharger), $3,095 (KW adjustable coilovers), $3,525 (Baer Extreme Plus brakes) and $1,870 (Corsa exhaust system). Add that to the $42,745 price of a base Dodge Challenger SRT8 plus $695 for the manual transmission, and you end up with a $72,820 car.

The Classic Design Concepts Group 2 Widebody Challenger is kind of like the Shelby GT500KR of Mopars: based on a $20,000 car and probably not the best bang for your buck, but it's the ultimate version of a really cool car. So if the Dodge Challenger is your dream car, then the CDC Group 2 Widebody Challenger is the biggest, baddest, and, without a doubt, widest one you can get.

Lotus releasing Elise Purist Edition for $43,995

Lotus Elise Purist Edition

Rumors have been circulating for almost a week that Lotus was planning to release a stripped-down, low-cost version of the Elise in the States. Today, we finally received confirmation from Lotus' U.S. PR-man, Kevin Smith, that indeed, the Elise "Purist" edition is on the way, and unlike the dozens of other limited-edition Elises coming out of Hethel, this is one we can actually get behind.

According to Smith, the "Purist" edition is an attempt to get the Elise closer to the MSRP it carried when introduced to the U.S. market in 2005. So Lotus has set the price at a slightly more achievable $43,995, or around $3,500 less than a base Elise.

However, the "Purist" is hardly a stripper model. Only available in Ardent Red, Monaco White and Saffron Yellow, the entry-level Lotus is still packing the 190-hp, Toyota-source 2ZZ 1.8-liter four and six-speed manual transmission, along with Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs, AP-developed calipers with ventilated and cross-drilled discs, silver wheels sized 16x5.5 in front and 17x7.5 in the rear, each shod in Yokohama Neova high-performance rubber (175/55 front, 225/45 rear). Black leather seats join a Momo steering wheel, power doors locks, air-conditioning, a four-speaker stereo with in-dash CD player, tire-pressure monitoring system and an alarm with engine immobilizer. The only option available is the Starshield coating for $995. Neither the Sport or Touring pack will be offered and we're okay with that – it's near perfection already.
