Watch the LS9 crate engine being built

Mated to a Corvette ZR1, the LS9 can get you from 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, and it will travel a quarter mile in 11.3 seconds. GM Performance Parts announced earlier in the week that beginning next fall, you won't need to own a ZR1 to get your hands on an LS9. The supercharged, 638-hp beast will be available as a crate engine to put under the hood of any project car that can handle the power.

The GM Performance Parts team is so excited about the crate LS9 that it shot a video of the blown small block being hand-assembled. The clip shows some of the more significant parts of the LS9's production process, as well as some of the testing performed to ensure your crate engine is up to snuff. The guys building LS9s are lightning fast at their craft, too, and we're sure most gearheads would love to have some of the equipment they use during the build process. Hit the jump to see the moving pictures for yourself, and start dreaming about your own fire-breathing LS9 project car.

Hyundai releases tech specs on 2010 Genesis Coupe

2010 Genesis Coupe

Hyundai's headline figure for the 2.0-liter turbo-equipped Genesis coupe is 30 mpg. While we can't fault Hyundai for trying to hype the two-door's fuel efficiency, for us, there are more important numbers to look at. Primarily power and weight.

The 310 hp, 3.8-liter V6 model equipped with either a six-speed manual or auto 'box tips the scales at 3,402 pounds, and will be available in Grand Touring and Track models. The GT variant includes a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front thrones, navigation system, 360-watt stereo with 10 speakers, Smart Key, push-button start, Xenon HIDs, HomeLink with compass, heated mirrors, a back-up warning system and sunroof. The Track model ditches the rear-end nanny and chrome accents on the front fascia, and instead gets black leather seats, 19-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires (225/40 front, 245/40 rear), 13.4-inch front brakes squeezed by four-piston Brembo calipers and 13.0-inch rear discs clamped by four-piston units. A torsen-type LSD, 22mm rear sway bar, 25mm front sway bar and strut tower brace accompany higher-rate coil springs and shocks to round out the package.

The turbocharged 2.0-liter Genesis Coupe comes in at 3,303 pounds, and is putting out 220 hp on premium fuel, with peak torque (223 lb.-ft.) arriving at 2,000 rpm. Transmission choices depend on which model you choose (six-speed manual or five-speed automatic), and range from the entry-level 2.0T variant to the 2.0T Premium, with the six-speed manual the only option cog-swapping on the 2.0T Track and 2.0T R-Spec.

The standard coupe gets 18-inch wheels hiding 12.6-inch (front) and 12.4-inch (rear) brakes, with single-piston floating calipers. The MacPherson front and five-link rear suspension is complimented by a strut brace, 24mm front and 19mm rear sway bars. The steering rack is 2.7 turns lock-to-lock, and all models come equipped with keyless entry, one-touch up-and-down windows, six-speaker audio with USB/iPod/Aux jack, steering wheel controls, cruise, projector beam lights and Bluetooth integration. The Premium model benefits from a 360-watt stereo and 10-speakers, along with the Smart Key system, push-button start, Homelink, navigation and sunroof.

More importantly, the track model gets 19-inch wheels wrapped in the same rubber as the V6 model, HID headlamps, LSD, 25mm (front) and 22 mm (rear) sway bars, 13.4-inch (front) and 13.0-inch (rear) Brembos, along with stiffer springs and shocks. The R-Spec model gets all the good bits from the Track variant, but doesn't include all the heavy niceties inside.

PRESS RELEASE

HYUNDAI RELEASES ADDITIONAL ENGINEERING AND FEATURE INFORMATION FOR THE ALL-NEW 2010 HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE

Genesis Coupe Delivers an Estimated 30 MPG

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 30, 2008 – Hyundai released additional engineering and feature information for the all-new 2010 Genesis Coupe today. The Genesis Coupe, and its rear-wheel drive platform-mate the Genesis sedan will make their Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show debuts next week.

"One of the program targets for the Genesis engineering team was world-class weight efficiency," said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "When you look at the size and content of both Genesis models, you'll find we lead all our competitors in weight efficiency. We also target leadership in power-to-weight ratio. We think that's just smart strategy in today's world. It pays huge dividends in both performance and fuel economy, and that's especially important in the segments in which these cars compete."

Vehicle Engine Curb Weight (pounds) Length (inches)
Genesis sedan 3.8-liter V6 3748 195.9
Genesis sedan 4.6-liter V8 4012 195.9
Genesis Coupe 2.0-liter turbo 3303 182.3
Genesis Coupe 3.8-liter V6 3402 182.3

Both Genesis Coupe and sedan are rich in ultra-high-strength steel, leading to world-class body rigidity. The Genesis sedan is 10-12 percent stiffer in torsion than Lexus and Mercedes-Benz competitors, yet it is lighter than these benchmark sedans, and offers more interior room. At just 3,303 pounds, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T is hundreds of pounds lighter than all of its IRS-equipped rear-wheel-drive competitors, with body-bending rigidity 24 percent higher than BMW E46 M3.

Vehicle Length Curb Weight (lbs.) Horsepower Power-to-weight ratio
Genesis Coupe 3.8 182.3 3402 310 (est.) 11.0
BMW 335i 181.1 3571 300 11.9
Infiniti G37 183.1 3616 330 11.0
Camaro LS 190.4 3780 300 (est.) 12.6
Challenger 197.7 3819 250 15.3

This focus on weight efficiency pays dividends across the board. The Genesis sedan owes its ability to deliver both strong performance (0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds) and excellent fuel economy (25 mpg EPA highway rating) in great part due to its impressive weight efficiency. Similarly, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T sets a new benchmark for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive gasoline fuel efficiency with a remarkable 30 mpg estimated EPA highway rating, because of its weight-efficient platform and its efficient 2.0-liter, low-pressure, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

"While some turbochargers sacrifice smooth drivability with high operating boost pressures in the 20 psi range, Genesis Coupe uses a refined, low-boost calibration for smoothness and efficiency," said Derek Joyce, Genesis Coupe product manager. "We could have opted solely for big performance numbers, but our focus for the 2.0T was a more balanced package."

GENESIS COUPE PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
With the start of U.S. market production now just a few months away, Hyundai Motor America is releasing model configuration and color choices for the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
"Genesis sedan has set a new benchmark for the $35,000-$40,000 premium sedan, and we think Genesis Coupe will do the same in the sport coupe segment," Krafcik said. "From our 30-mpg 2.0T with its low-pressure intercooled 4-cylinder turbo, to the 3.8 Track model with an estimated 310-hp and Brembo braking system, Genesis Coupe offers a wide range of powertrain and performance choices for driving enthusiasts of all stripes."

LSE Range Rover Sport Coupe to debut at SEMA

For all those who thought the BMW X6 SUV/Coupe was brilliant, here’s the next step. With the help of some customization from LSE Design, an U.K. based tuner, the Range Rover Sport was transformed from a 4-door SUV into a coupe. The 2009 LSE Range Rover Sport Coupe will be built in a limited edition of just 200 units, each priced at $250,000. According to the manufacturer only 50 units will be produced for the U.S. so you’d better start saving some money.

Although the car is cool, this isn’t exactly an original idea considering the Range Rover Sport is based on the Range Stormer concept and Land Rover is possibly putting the LRX into production.

Nissan 370Z in Need for Speed: Undercover

We can't remember the last time, if ever, a video game made us really want to check out a car, but we have to see the new Nissan 370Z now. In the Need for Speed: Undercover teaser video it looked neat, but in the official shots a few days later the car looked like it was suffering from bloating and cramps. For some reason, however, the Z in motion -- and with, of course, perfect lighting -- does it for us. The perhaps overly teased front and rear lights make a certain sense now, but the truncated rear end still gives us pause. We're not yet settled on how we feel about it, but we can't wait to see it in person. Check it out video of the 370Z in Need for Speed: Undercover for yourself after the jump, and stay tuned for live coverage from the LA Auto Show.

Mercedes-Benz GLKs go from mild to WTF

Mercedes-Benz GLKs

Mercedes-Benz' presence at SEMA has traditionally included a smattering of pimptastic E- and S-Classes lining the booths of the Big Balla tuners, and this year, we can expect more of the same. But to get the word out about the new GLK, Mercedes enlisted the help of four firms to accentuate the lil' 'ute's character and clientele.

Heading the line-up is the unfortunately named Urban Whip (above), the handy work of Florida-based Boulevard Customs, who removed the roof, fitted a custom wide-body kit, 26-inch wheels and wrapped up the package with a redesigned interior and booming sound system. We're impressed with the execution, but the proportions are far from becoming.

Just as odd, if slightly less ridiculous, is the Four Corners Rock Crawler created by Legendary Motor Cars. The GLK gets a handful of off-road upgrades to make treks to the beach a breeze, but the party-piece is a winch that can bring skateboarders up to speed, allowing them to grind down the integrated side rails.

Any assembly of M-Bs wouldn't be complete without a Brabus-massaged model, so the Widestar was born. Based off a GLK equipped with a reworked 320 BlueTEC V6 turbodiesel, the Widestar's extra grunt is complimented by new front and rear arch flares, redesigned bumpers, Brabus wheels and a custom interior.

Finally, there's the RENNTech Rally Racer, inspired by the unlimited-class rally cars that attack Pikes Peak during the annual Hillclimb. Aside from the Cessna-sized wing and aggressive body kit, the only thing we know about the RENNTech is that it features a hybrid powertrain that supposed to make quick work of the corners.

AC Schnitzer BMW X6 Falcon

AC Schnitzer BMW X6 Falcon

Idle hands are the devil's playthings, and apparently AC Schnitzer has a lot of time on its hands. You're only required to read the first two lines of the company's press release to realize that the crew formerly known for creating rolling automotive masterworkz have officially donned their collective bouffants, made like the Fonz and jumped the shark. Here's proof: The BMW X6 Falcon.

Using the X5 Falcon as unfortunate inspiration, the X6 variant gets the same stretched out body work, giving the 'ute a 70mm wider track in the front and an additional 80mm in the rear. According to AC, extensive testing was done on the Nurburgring to hone the Falcon's high-speed prowess, aided by a new front lip, air intakes, repositioned fog lamps, side skirts and rear wing. Black or silver 22-inch Type VII wheels fill the massive arches and although it's not clear in the release, we suspect that some lowering springs were used to keep the ride-height in check.

As for power, the only models to benefit from engine tweaks are the X6 3.0d and 3.5d, boosting power to 272 hp (from 235 hp) and 310 hp (from 286 hp), respectively. And naturally, AC will sell you a set of chrome tailpipes, aluminum interior trim, pedals and floor mats emblazoned with its logo.

Techart GTstreet R

Techart GTstreet R

Techart has worked its magic, yet again, on the 997 Porsche 911 Turbo, boosting output of the twin-turbo'd flat-six to 660 hp and 634 lb.-ft. of torque. The Techart GTstreet R benefits from a duo of new turbos, larger carbon fiber inlet pipes, revised intercoolers and a new cat-back exhaust mated to the revised manifold which all help to drop the 997's 0-60 time to 3.4 seconds when equipped with an auto 'box and 3.5 seconds with a manual. Top speed is a claimed 214 mph.

Keeping the Techart-modified 911 planted at speed is a new coil-over kit and 20-inch wheels that work in conjunction with a wind-tunnel-tested body kit and carbon fiber spoiler to add another 22 pounds of down force. If those specs aren't enough to make it stand out, Techart also offers a new hood, carbon fiber headlights, side sills and air ducting for the rear bumper.

McLaren planning three new models, including one $96k sports car

McLaren planning three new models

McLaren has several fingers in a handful of pies, and with its tenure with Mercedes-Benz coming to an end, it has more time to focus on expanding its range to compete with the big boys from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche.

According to CAR, three new models are being developed, spanning the range from a modern-day F1 to a $96,000 (£60,000) "entry-level" halo sports car that takes aim at the Porsche 911. The new coupe will utilize McLaren's extensive fabrication and materials experience, but at a sub-$100k price point, don't expect construction methods akin to its greatest hits. Power could be provided by a M-B mill, but McLaren isn't ruling out the development of its own engine.

Filling the rest of the range will be the P11 supercar, reportedly using a 600-hp, AMG-sourced 6.2-liter V8, and a yet-to-be-named vehicle that will slot in below its range-topper and 911-fighter. The recent appointment of Frank Stephenson – the man who brought us the MINI and Fiat 500 – as design director, partnered with McLaren's legendary chassis development means good things are on the way. Here's hoping some of it finds its way to U.S. shores.

Audi's new up!-based city car

Audi’s new green baby

The up! is primed to be VW's long-awaited encore to the "People's Car," providing consumers abroad with an extremely efficient run-about that can get up to 95 European MPGs. The up! sounds like a vehicle VW should have been building all along, but does it sound like an Audi? The scribes over at Auto Express think so, and their rendering of an Audi up! looks the part. The image is a lightly reworked version of the stylish little up! concept, with body panels and roof lines looking very much like the V-Dub city car from that was first unveiled at Frankfurt.

The headlights are more vertical on the Audi and the open mouth look on the up!'s lower fascia is truncated by Audi's trademark split grille. The C-pillar is more triangular than the up! and the taillamps look like they were ripped from an A4 and stretched vertically.

Auto Express is reporting that an Audi version of the up! will be available in 2012. If that's true, it's unlikely we'll see the micro-Audi in the States in '12 anyway. We colonials aren't usually up (rimshot) for spending a big premium for a really small car that isn't named MINI.

2009 Honda Element debuts, priced from $20,175

2009 Honda Element

Honda has taken the wraps off its redesigned 2009 Element after a number of leaked shots revealed the CUV's new skin. Priced from $20,175 for a 2WD LX model to $25,185 for a 4WD EX with Honda's Satellite-linked navigation, the new Element arrives looking much more grown up than its quirky predecessor. Retaining the same lunch box shape as before, the '09 Element gets a new front end with its own version of Honda's new corporate grille that debuted on its bigger brother, the Pilot SUV. Whereas the first Element used matte black plastic fenders to get across its off-the-beaten-path personality, the new one is dressed in color keyed sheetmetal on all four sides. The rear end has also been tweaked with a redesigned lift gate and taillights.

The Element's interior includes new color combos, titanium-look accents, new fabrics and revised switchgear, as well as a new convertible center console with a removable cooler. There's also a new three-compartment overhead console available. Buyers can choose from three models: the base LX, up-level EX and sportier SC. All three are powered by Honda's 2.4L inline-four engine with i-VTEC that produces 166 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy ranges from 18 city/23 highway for the SC and 20/25 for the LX and EX.

The new Element is certainly an improvement over the outgoing model, at least in the looks category, but functionally speaking it offers the same experience as the one before. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing considering the Element offers unique capabilities in a small, efficient package.

Lexus reveals four tuned IS Fs, IS 350 and LX570

Lexus reveals four tuned IS Fs, IS 350 and LX570

Lexus decided that its presence at SEMA should revolve around its most tuner-friendly models, specifically its range of IS sedans. So in addition to the Five Axis IS F that's been making the rounds since late last year, Lexus has tapped some notable names in tuning, along with a few magazines, to create a handful of bespoke vehicles to populate its booth. But the IS 350 and four tweaked IS Fs won't stand alone. They'll be joined by another Five Axis creation built around the GS 460, along with an LX 570 SUV created by the crew at Icon 4x4 Design.

Click here for our take on each model, along with official details on each IS F, the Lexus' F-sport-tuned IS 350 and the big 'ute.

IS 350 with F-Sport Accessories

Lexus Description: The IS 250/350 is Lexus' entry point into the luxury sport sedan arena. It's a tuner-friendly and robust platform that responds extremely well to performance upgrades. This car is fully loaded with all the offerings from the F-Sport performance accessory catalog. It also sports a new concept ground-effects body kit designed to complement the increased performance and aggressive stance provided by the F-Sport components.

Autoblog's Take: As much as Lexus wants to make the IS 350 a serious sports sedan, it's always been hampered by a cushy ride, fade-prone brakes and at-the-limit understeer. Thankfully, Lexus' line of F-Sport accessories has the potential to cure many of those ills. We're particularly interested in how the Bilsteins, springs and beefier sway bars shore up the chassis, all of which -- along with the Advans -- should cure the IS 350's terminal plowing. While we're big fans of in-house-developed performance parts, particularly since they can be rolled into the monthly payments, we're curious how much all this kit would add to the MSRP... and how close the sticker would be to an IS F.

IS F by Fox Marketing/Artisan Performance

Lexus Description: Fox Marketing and Artisan Performance teamed to create this subtle yet aggressive makeover of the already aggressive IS F. The subtle part involves the numerous bodywork changes, which enhance rather than rethink the lines of the IS F, making it look even more muscular in the process. 'Aggressive' can be applied to the engine which gets the full twin-turbo treatment. Fox expects the changes will yield something north of 600 horsepower.

Autoblog's Take: We've already gotten the details and a few pics of the Fox Marketing/Artisan Performance IS F, and we're suitably impressed with the custom body kit, burnt-orange hue, blacked-out roof and iForged wheels. Add a bespoke twin-turbo setup, JE pistons and Crower rods good for an estimated 600+ horsepower and we're willing to overlook the custom Callaway golf club set in the trunk. But what we can't overlook is the lack of braking upgrades and the simple set of Eibach lowering springs. Balance is key, and that's the only thing the Fox/Artisan IS F is lacking.

Lexus Description: Import Tuner Magazine and TEIN suspension company put their collective heads and expertise together to create an IS F that's focused on track performance, while still remaining practical for the street. Weight reduction, added chassis stiffness, special suspension and big sticky tires take care of the corners, while a comprehensive nitrous system boosts the engine for bursts of overtaking power. Coming soon to a track near you.

Autoblog's Take: What would an Import Tuner vehicle be without a healthy shot of NOS and a TEIN figurine? Certainly not up to the mag's idee fixe of bikini-clad babes and bright-colored body kits. Thankfully, TEIN was around to stop the madness with a set of coilovers equipped with its EDFC electronic damping system. The Tom's front and rear suspension braces should do wonders for chassis flex, along with the rear strengthening brace, and we can't deny any vehicle that's sporting stitch-welded body seams, adjustable front control arms and biggie-sized Brembo GTs. We give it five points for a complete package, but deduct two points for excessive vinyl usage.

  • Five Axis dry carbon front lip

IS F by 0-60 Magazine

Lexus Description: With track performance a common theme among IS F builders, 0-60 Magazine ups the ante on their IS F project with a supercharger to tease out another load of horses from the big V8. Carbon fiber body components reduce weight while lowering the center of gravity and a custom roll cage adds stiffness and protection. A beefy brake upgrade kit was added to balance the performance equation.

Autoblog's Take: We know first-hand that the 0-60 crew knows how to drive (we rode with Spinelli in a GT-R), so it's no surprise that the buff book's IS F blends the right amount of power with the proper dose of stick. Although they haven't provided us with output figures for the GReddy-supercharged bent-eight, our educated guesstimation puts it somewhere in the neighborhood of 550 hp. That extra grunt and the carbon fiber body panels should do a lot to cure the IS F's biggest issue: weight. And with a custom roll cage, TEIN suspension, upgraded brakes and a set of Yokohama Advan RZ wheels wrapped in Hankook Ventus EVO V12 rubber, this is the first IS F we'd actually like to drive. We await a call from Mr. Scotto.

IS F by MotorworldHype.com

Lexus Description: MotorworldHype has taken another path that is a bit less aggressive, yet more easily accessible for the average consumer. Lots of carbon to reduce some unwanted mass and a well-rounded package of suspension, brake, engine and cosmetic changes provide sharper responses in all directions.

Autoblog's Take: Show before go or a well-rounded package? The MotorworldHype IS F is equipped with all the tried-and-true show-car standards: Volk TE37s, Michelin Pilot Sport 2s, a carbon fiber splitter and diffuser, along with a Brembo GT front brake package. While this IS F might be a good representation of what your standard owner might do to his V8-powered luxo-sedan, we can't help feeling like this one was phoned-in.

LX 570 by ICON 4x4 Design

Lexus Description: ICON specializes in 4x4s that are typically off-road oriented. But they envisioned something different for the plush, yet rugged LX 570. Their approach here is to give the LX a clean and stealthy appearance through clever use of colors and trim, then top with performance improvements to further enhance the appeal of Lexus' premier luxury utility vehicle.

Autoblog's Take: Footballers take notice (both in the U.S. and Europe) -- your wife's ride has arrived. With only a custom intake, a new exhaust and a "performance brake system", the ICON LX 570 puts money where it matters – to its customers. The firm normally know for serious off-roaders has taken the path most-traveled with its SEMAfied 'ute and we're guessing you care about as much as us.

Nissan drops 370Z ahead of LA Debut!

Nissan drops 370Z ahead of LA Debut!

Looking pretty much like what everyone has been expecting for months now, the 2010 Nissan 370Z dropped this morning. The company hasn't released any details, although from the new nomenclature we can surmise that the sports car contains the new 3.7L V6 as used in the Infiniti G37. The new Z goes on sale early in 2009, and we'll see it live at the LA Auto Show in a few weeks.

BMW creating 'green supercar' for 2012

BMW M1 Hommage

BMW is hard at work on the M1's successor and according to Autocar's sources, officials inside the automaker are calling it a "breakthrough green supercar" that will arrive towards the end of 2012.

Taking inspiration from the M1 Homage concept and equipping the two-door with BMW's EfficientDynamics system, the mid-engine supercar is rumored to be packing the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six found across BMW's range. The automaker expects fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions to be on par with a mid-range 5-series sedan, primarily through the use of direct-injection, brake regeneration, start-stop technology and even its F1 team's kinetic energy recovery system.

The unnamed BMW supercar is expected to carry a price tag close to its rivals, the Audi R8 and the Mercedes-Benz SLC.

GM debuts Chevy GPiX Concept in Sao Paulo

Chevy GPiX Concept

General Motors officially debuted the GPiX Concept, which we previewed for you last week, at the Sao Paulo Auto Show in Brazil yesterday. It was designed entirely by GM Design in Brazil but retains those corporate styling cues that make it instantly recognizable as a modern Chevy around the world. This two-door crossover has a bit of ground clearance for what GM calls "the types of roads and conditions found in emerging markets." We think that means no roads and poor conditions. There's no mention of what powers the GPiX concept, though we assume it's either A) not a runner, B) has a fictional super efficient prototype powertrain underhood or C) uses a four-cylinder gas motor capable of running on E100 ethanol. GM also says that the GPiX could be a potential new segment for the automaker in South America, but in these tough times we doubt it's really interested in developing a solo vehicle for a single market.

PRESS RELEASE

Chevrolet Reveals the GPiX Crossover Coupe Concept

Sao Paulo, Brazil - General Motors revealed the Chevrolet GPiX crossover coupe concept today at the 25th edition of the Sao Paulo International Auto Show. The Chevrolet GPiX concept was developed by General Motors Design in Brazil and represents a potential new segment for GM in the Mercosur region.

The GPiX concept features a two-door body style with high ground clearance appropriate for the types of roads and conditions found in emerging markets. "It offers the sporty design and versatility necessary for a country with the continental dimensions of Brazil," said Carlos Barba, General Director of Design for GM Latin America, Africa and Middle East.

GPiX also combines Chevrolet's global design "DNA" with the cost-benefit proposition necessary to compete in today's emerging markets. Jaime Ardila, President of General Motors Brazil and Mercosur said, "with this project, the Chevrolet GPiX concept could result in the development of many models for Brazil and the Mercosur region."

Dynamic and daring design

The GPiX concept draws attention with its strong profile and a lateral waistline that exudes dynamism. Its daring front end is highlighted by the famous Chevrolet gold bowtie in the front grille and LED headlamps. The 17-inch mixed-use wheels and tires add a rugged look to the crossover coupe. And, the panoramic glass roof provides maximum light in the passenger compartment and increases the sensation of space.

Versatile on the inside with space for four

The GPiX concept stands out even more for its versatility and technology. Its interior is functional with seating for four. All seats fold and the floor panel is flat, which increases spaciousness.

The instrument panel has a modern design, with easy-to-read digital displays. The multifunctional steering wheel has a completely new design and is made for total driver-car interaction. The driver can easily use the connectivity and entertainment systems available, such as Bluetooth, hand-held computers, CD player and MP3 player, among others.

It also includes features that customers have come to expect in production Chevrolet vehicles offered in Brazil, such as air conditioning, power steering and power windows.

The name GPiX is a pseudonym for Global Image. "G" for global and "Pix" meaning "picture" or "image".

GM Design Center in Brazil

GM's Design Center in Brazil is one of 11 GM studios around the world. Its facilities are being expanded to meet increased responsibilities in the GM global development process.

GM is investing US$ 36 million to expand the facilities, acquire new and more modern equipment and hire new professionals. When complete, the GM Design Center in Brazil will triple in size from 3,000 sq. m. to 9,150 sq. m. and the staff will increase from 79 to 190 professionals.

New round of Aston Martin One-77 shots

Aston Martin One-77
Aston Martin One-77

Despite Aston Martin's efforts to keep the One-77 supercar under wraps, four images have leaked out and we expect more to follow in the coming days.

Viewed in profile, the One-77's silhouette is pure Aston, taking all the right cues from its predecessors and forming them into a slightly elongated and exaggerated form. The massive grille is an obvious nod to the Astons of yore, but the hood delves deeper than its DB9 and Vantage counterparts and benefits from four contoured strakes terminating into a set of air extractors. The creases that bisect the blacked-out headlamps and front fenders are pure aggression, and the vents aft of the front wheels ensure that the 700 hp V12 is kept cool at speed.

Out back, Aston's signature rump is present and accounted for, but a new taillight design that evolves the automaker's current offerings, a rear diffuser and a center-exit exhaust are all elements that we expect to see on future models.

6,000 Camaros ordered so far, 84% with V8

2010 chevy camaro,

Chevrolet has reportedly taken more than 6,000 orders for its new Camaro so far, and why not? The car is great looking, excitement is high, and fuel prices have eased up a bit. You'd think that the prior spike in the cost of fuel would still be fresh on everyone's mind, thus making the V6 a popular choice. Wrongo. While the V6 has similar lip-smackingly great styling, and won't be a slowpoke, it seems that everyone wants that small block rhythm thumping away under the hood of their neo-ponycar. 84% of orders have been for V8-powered SS models so far, which may mean a longer wait for delivery since GM is likely building a very different ratio of V8 to V6 models.

Honda rolls out low financing rates for best-selling Civic

2009 Honda Civic

The Civic has been a pillar of the Honda lineup for decades, and high gas prices have made it even more important to the Japanese automaker's success here in the U.S. Back in May and June, Honda couldn't make enough Civics, but with the auto industry here in the States imploding, even Honda's little money maker needs incentives. Right now, buyers with good credit can pick up a brand new 2008 or 2009 Civic with 1.9% financing for 36 months or 3.9% APR for up to 60 months. All models except the GX are included in the offer, even the Civic Hybrid.

If you're not looking to buy a Civic, you can lease one for $1,999 down and $189 a month for 36 months. That's $1,100 cheaper than the previous offer of $2,799 down and $199 a month. Honda says the incentive offers are necessary in part because of lowering gas prices, and the Japanese automaker wants to continue to see Civics fly off dealer lots to keep its new Indiana factory humming. Honda dealers are also happy about the Civic deals in light of Toyota's 0% financing program on 11 vehicles, but they would like to see even more. Between 0% financing at Toyota and hefty discounts on 2009 Civics, we have all the evidence we need that U.S. auto market is completely screwed right now.

Next Ferrari F430 will use a turbocharged V8

Next Ferrari F430
Next Ferrari F430

Not many people would have predicted that the Ferrari Enzo would be the guideline for the whole Ferrari line, but it seems the aerodynamic wedge shape will find its way onto the replacement for the F430. Internally known as the F142, the next Ferrari will likely borrow styling cues from the Mille Chili concept and should be revealed in late 2009 or early 2010. The F142 will be lighter than the F430 Scuderia (around 2750 lbs.) and will be powered by a mid-engined turbocharged V8 engine, with small displacement.

A convertible version is set to follow shortly after the coupe’s debut. Taking a cue for the California, it is rumored that Ferrari is working on an ultra-light folding metal roof.

2009 Mercedes CLK Cabrio

The next CLK Cabriolet -- or E-Class Coupe Cabriolet depending on Mercedes' choice of nomenclature -- is out and about, wearing lots of camouflage. While this rendering looks like it could still be pretty accurate, the front fog lights have given way to LED's, which are lit in this latest round of images. The extended trunk deck lid we've seen before, but now we get a close-up and the strong crease line that bisects the rear of the car. It also looks to get a bit fussy back there because the trunk is distinct from the body panel that hides the roof. We'll know more when the car goes hits the show circuit next year, but this car could be more than a little revolutionary.

Mitsuoka Galue S50 Limousine plops onto the scene

Mitsuoka Galue S50 Limousine
Mitsuoka Galue S50 Limousine
Mitsuoka Galue S50 Limousine

Mitsuoka, that tiny Japanese manufacturer who makes the wonderfully wacky Orochi sea monster, has introduced its latest automotive mash-up, just in time to give us a Halloween fright. It is a derivative of the company's Galue III (the return of the shapeshifter) and is known as the Galue Limousine S50. This shouldn't be confused with the company's Galue 204 Toyota Corolla rebody, or the Galue Convertible, which is based on the Ford Mustang. Instead, this limo is based on the Infiniti M, but incorporates styling touches from such classic designs as the '94 Cadillac Fleetwood, the Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Apple iPhone. While that might not sound too offensive, trust us, it is.

Remember the classic Beetles with the R-R grilles? Imagine that on a new Infiniti M35. And out back, that gracefully curved rear has been amended with Caddy taillight protrusions. Where once stood a B-pillar, we now have a foot-wide panel that houses an oversized iPhone-like glass panel. Like the retro-classic Excaliburs of the '70s and '80s, Mitsuoka apparently feels people will like modern running gear hidden beneath "classic" British looks. Priced between 8,016,750 yen (68,600 euros at the exchange) for the 223-hp 250LX to 9,345,000 (80,000 euros) for the 313-hp 350LX 4WD, we think that's a lot of coin for a Frankencar like this. Heck, you could probably find a used Continental GT for about the same. You could even rebadge it as a Hyundai if it makes you feel better.

Volkwagen readying Touareg 2 for 2009 Dakar

Volkswagen Touareg 2 Race

Volkswagen Motorsport is putting four factory-backed teams in next year's 'Dakar' Rally, which will actually be held in South America, and they'll all be driving the new Race Touareg 2. The insanely intricate spaceframe chassis vehicles are being built in Germany and will use will use a 2.5-liter TDI with 276 hp and. The 15-stage race is expected to be more grueling than usual because of the extreme changes in altitude and terrain, but perhaps it will give other teams a chance to break Mitsubishi's seven-year chokehold on the winner's dais. Volkswagen's best chance at victory could be with driver Carlos Sainz, the 1990 WRC champion, and navigator Michel Perlin, a three-time Dakar winning navigator. The last -- and only -- time VW won the Dakar Rally was in 1980, with the Volkswagen Iltis.

Volvo S60 Concept

Volvo S60 Concept

Uh oh, it’s usually a pretty good sign that a company is running out of ideas for the exterior of its cars when its big preview is of the interior’s center console. Then again, the concept for the new Volvo S60 features a custom piece of Orrefors crystal. This shimmering radio-holder should make its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

While the pure expense of this crystal center stack will likely eliminate it from the production car’s option list, it is also unlikely that the company known for outright safety will let you drive away with a interior full of untempered glass.

Press release

Volvo Cars has engaged world-famous Swedish glassworks Orrefors in the work with the company’s next concept car, which will be a first taste of the next-generation Volvo S60. The joint creation, a floating centre stack of hand-made Orrefors crystal, will be shown for the first time at the Detroit international motor show in January 2009.

In the concept car, the graceful, crystal-clear centre stack forms a gentle, calm wave from the instrument panel all the way to the rear seat backrest.

"It almost looks like a waterfall from the instrument panel, flowing through the centre of the car," says Volvo Cars design director Steve Mattin.

The crystal panel appears to float above the centre console’s smart functionality. It rests softly on rubber pads and with the help of invisible light sources the crystal’s shimmering glow can be tailored to match the driver’s mood.

"If you want to explore the full scope of Scandinavian design, Sweden’s glassworks are a natural source of inspiration. Large glass areas are also very much part of modern Swedish architecture, creating the special, light transparency," says Steve Mattin.

He adds: "In a concept car, you are able to release your imagination and creativity. Our iconic, super-thin centre stack was the perfect subject. We reinterpreted it and gave it a refined new form. Then it was up to Orrefors to use their superb skill to transform our exciting vision into reality."

Handicraft down to the tiniest detail

The experts at Orrefors were keen to accept the challenge and the result is one of the most unusual and handicraft-intensive objects in the company’s 110-year history. Producing the stack was in itself a challenge beyond the ordinary - even for the experienced experts at Orrefors.

Traditionally, the moulds for the crystal are first chiselled by hand from thick planks of alder wood. After casting, the glass is carefully polished to produce its final, crystal-clear lustre.

"The undulating, slightly twisted shape and the precise dimensional requirements were two exciting challenges we had to face. Crystal is a living material, shaped by living people. We are not used to working with tolerances of tenths of a millimetre. What is more, we’re talking here about an exceptionally large piece of glass," explains Orrefors design manager Gunilla Arvidsson.

Crystal-like future plans

In order to meet the relevant strength standards, the finished piece consists of three sections joined together at the Volvo Cars concept car workshops.

"The full-size crystal piece in the concept car will not be a production feature. However, it does open up opportunities to use crystal on a smaller scale in the future. We’ll have to see how our customers respond," says Steve Mattin.

Creativity and functionality

Although the material in the centre stack radiates uninhibited artistic freedom, the functions that are integrated have been thought through in every single tiny detail.

  • Beside the driver’s seat, the crystal console cuts straight through the instrument panel and its upper section forms a navigation screen at the precise height of the driver’s combined instrument.
  • At the bottom, the four iconic rotating controls protrude from elegant matt-polished recesses in the glass panel. In the middle there is a removable remote control.
  • The gear selector has a versatile new shape. In the horizontal position it offers drive in automatic mode. If the driver is in the mood for sporty manual gearchanges, the lever can be flipped up into the vertical position. Beside the gear selector there is also a starter button and parking brake.
  • The centre console runs all the way to the rear seat backrest, and under the crystal panel between the individual seats there are two drinks holders that slide elegantly forward when required.

"We’ve put the focus on ergonomics and safety. With the combined instrument at the same height as the navigation screen, all it takes is a horizontal eye movement to switch between sources of information. Another example is that the controls used when you start and stop driving are a few centimetres from each other near the gear selector," explains Steve Mattin.

Mutual inspiration

At the Volvo Cars design centre, exploring the glassworks in the deepest forests of southern Sweden has been a stimulating adventure.

"The clean lines of the Orrefors products have been a true source of inspiration for many years. This was perfect timing for using crystal as a material in a concept car too," says Steve Mattin. For the Orrefors glassworks, the debut as a supplier to the car world has also served as a new creative inspiration.

"Volvo’s thin centre stack is an industrial product with an artistic yet at the same time functional form. It immediately inspires you to think of other application areas. Why not an elegant hanging ceiling light or a table-top ornament of some sort? We’ll just have to see," says Gunilla Arvidsson.

Giugiaro Mustang Concept doing donuts

The Giugiaro Mustang concept has been around since the 2006 LA Auto Show, and damn if it doesn't still look great. In fact, spy photos of the next-gen Mustang show plenty of Giugiaro cues, especially at the front end. It makes sense, then, that the Fabrizio Giugiaro-designed pony car concept has been out on the street being driven since its debut. Last year, Mr.Giugiaro messed up a rim while (poorly) parking his creation in Bulgaria, and we just found this YouTube video from last February of the Italian Stallion doing donuts in a parking lot. Based on our experience, most concept cars don't even run under their own power, and those that do are usually limited to low speeds. That is to say, concept cars aren't usually seen doing donuts in a parking lot. Follow the jump to view the rubber-ripping video for yourself, and if you speak the language of the yahoos behind the camera, let the rest of us know what they're saying.

Audi releases sketches of A5 Cabrio, Sportback, A7 and next A8

Audi A5 Cabrio

According to Motor Authority, Audi has released official sketches of some upcoming vehicles that are currently gestating in the German brand's product pipeline. The first is the A5 Cabrio, though we don't need a sketch to know that it will look exactly like the A5 Coupe but with a folding soft top. Next up is the A5 Sportback, a four-door coupish type thing that we expect will get in the way of A4 sales just like the CC does for the Passat over at Volkswagen. Then we have the A7, which is a four-door coupe like the A5 Sportback, just larger and with a normal trunk instead of a rear hatch. And finally we have the car you see above, the next-gen A8, which looks much more aggressive than the current model with "angry eye" headlights, a large singular grille and sharp creases all around. Still up for Audi after these models come to market are more versions of the R8 supercar, including a convertible and V10-powered variant, and the A1 minicar for Europe.

How NOT to unload your car from a trailer

Funnily enough, these guys aren't the only ones to ever use a box truck to ruinous effect on an automobile. There's a story that comes to mind involving a Ryder truck, a loading dock, and a Porsche 911 carcass, but we walked away from that situation when the stupid clouds started looming on the horizon. These Subaru movers went all the way, using what looks like folding cafeteria tables as a makeshift ramp. Everyone involved received a compound physics lesson when 3,000 pounds of automobile met an unsecured and poorly constructed ramp, overcoming whatever friction was holding that Rube Goldberg assemblage together, and the little Rex topped it off with a refresher course in gravity. Whoops. At least it looks like the car was already banged up. Say it with us now: "that'll buff out."

Fiat postpones Alfa's return to the States?

Fiat postpones Alfa's return to the States?

Dang. And everything was looking so good for a return of the Alfa Romeo brand to the United States. Too bad, it seems, 'cause the latest reports indicate that the Italian purveyor of stylish automobiles such as the Brera, 159 and the drool-worthy 149 will be pushed back to 2011 at the earliest. Fortunately for the very well heeled, the Alfa 8C Competizione has been made available through an assorted group of Maserati dealerships, though it's already sold out. Such a quick sellout indicates that there are plenty of enthusiasts anxiously awaiting the marque's entrance Stateside, but our current horrible economic climate will likely dictate otherwise.

Alfa's owner, Fiat, is having difficulties of its own as it attempts to stem the tide of falling sales figures along with rest of the industry. Apparently, the only way for Fiat to make money selling cars in America is to build them here. We wish some sort of deal could be made with Cerberus to use up some of the under-utilized factories that Chrysler currently has available. and a deal Something like this could indeed take place, but probably not until the auto market stabilizes and the Detroit 3 figure out their various positions in the new-look landscape.

Gold-Plated Alchemist Aston DB7

Aston Martin makes some of the most beautiful cars in the world. Take, for instance, the critically-acclaimed DB7. Based on the Jaguar XJS platform, styled by Ian Callum and introduced to an extremely excited market in 1994, it was the firm's most successful car ever and it is still recognized as a breathtaking design. So, what do you do to make the DB7 even more stunning? Apparently, if you are the Alchemists, you plate it with 24-carat gold and platinum leaf and embed seven diamonds (for 007 we assume) into its shapely bodywork. Or, if you ask us, you paint it in resplendent British Racing Green and leave it exactly as God and Ian Callum intended. The day after the upcoming James Bond flick Quantum of Solace comes out in the U.K., the car will appear at the MPH Show at London's Earls Court and will be just one of 200 supercars on display. We wish they'd leave it at home, or sell it to an oil sheik... anything to get it out of our sight.

R&T takes a guess at Tesla's Model S

Tesla's Model S

Road and Track has taken an early speculative look at what Tesla's Model S sedan may look like. Of course, it's impossible to know for sure how close this rendering may be to the real thing, but it's always fun to guess, right? We can see some clear inspiration taken from the company's first effort, the Tesla Roadster, along with a hint of Nissan GT-R in its flanks. We know for sure that the rear of the car will feature a deeply sloping hatchback, like the Porsche Panamera, and R&T's artists seem to have that feature down, as well.

We've actually gotten an early peek at the Model S from the rear via Tesla's new design chief Franz von Holzhausen, formerly of Mazda fame, which shows a nice carbon fiber rear diffuser and an aerodynamically sound cut-off hind end. Unfortunately, the Model S has been delayed by roughly six months due to the tough economic climate and some massive reorganization taking place at the Silicon Valley automaker. We don't expect to see the fully developed car until next Spring.

Lamborghini Super Trofeo stars in one-make race series

Lamborghini Super Trofeo

Ferrari does it. Porsche does it. And now, Lamborghini is going to do it, too. "It" is a single-make race series, and Lambo's will showcase a competition-spec Gallardo LP560-4 dubbed the Super Trofeo. Each race will feature 30 of the cars, piloted by deep-pocketed private owners, dealer teams, and a single, Lambo-sponsored "celebrity driver" who'll change from race-to-race.

The Super Trofeo racer weighs in at 1300 kg/2866 lb and is spec'd out with all the requisite safety equipment; race-specific chassis adjustments, ABS brakes and wheels; Pirelli slicks; new instrumentation; and aero tweaks. The powered-up 5.2L direct-injected V10 sends 570 horses to all four wheels via the automaker's e.gear six-speed sequential gearbox. If you have the itch, head to your Lamborghini dealer with €200,000 -- that's the buy-in fee for the car and parts package. Each race will offer trackside support and parts sales to participants, who get to cool their heels in luxury at the Lamborghini Village that'll be set up at every venue. It all kicks off next May at Silverstone.

NASA tests new lunar rover

NASA tests new lunar rover

This week in Arizona, NASA conducted tests of the new battery-powered Small Pressurized Rover (SPR) it hopes to use when the U.S. sends astronauts back to the moon by 2020. The SPR is a huge leap forward over the original open-air (or is it open-vacuum?) rovers used by the Apollo astronauts. The configuration consists of a pressurized cabin mounted atop a modular chassis that can drive in any direction, thans to wheels that turn 360 degrees. The cockpit leads back to an area housing an airlock that the astronauts can use to transfer from one rover to another, from the rover to a apacecraft, or from a rover to a surface installation and vice-versa.

At the back of that compartment are two "suitports" that allow the astronauts to enter and exit their EVA (extra-vehicular activity) spacesuits without having to bring them into the vehicle itself. The suit backpacks lock into the ports and open up, allowing the wearer to climb out and work in the pressurized vehicle in normal clothing. Very, very cool stuff here. Since the rover is modular in nature, it can also operate as a non-pressurized vehicle, with all the operators in turrets wearing suits. Top speed is 10 km/h (around 6 mph), and the rover should enable astronauts to go on missions away from base for up to two weeks, covering up to 625 miles, according to Reuters.

ABT Sportsline releases new mat carbon film for A4, Q7 and R8

ABT carbon Q7
ABT carbon Q7

Carbon fiber is light but expensive. For those who just want to look fast, ABT is offering faux carbon fiber wraps for cars like the Audi like A4, Q7 and R8.

The new foil is made on matte carbon film delivered by Kempten Company. While it can be used on performance cars like the AS4, AS7, ABT R8, it also just as effective on much lessor Audis.

For all those boy-racers who want to use this for a shortcut, remember moderation is the key. People may believe your A4 has a carbon fiber hood, but it will be hard to convince anyone that you had the doors, bumpers and pillars replaced too.

Chevrolet Camaro "Black"

Chevrolet Camaro

One of the stars of this year's SEMA show is the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and General Motors has every intention of creating even more buzz with a handful of customized pony cars.

We've already seen video of the General's in-house tuning team ripping apart a few pre-production models in preparation for the big day, and Chevrolet has released a teaser sketch of the first bespoke Camaro, tentatively dubbed "Black." Details are scarce, but the list of modifications range from a new front lip spoiler, bigger exhaust tips, five-spoke wheels and a pair of red-lit halo headlamps.

Volkswagen SP2 redux

Marcelo Rosa's SP2

Back in the 1970s when Volkswagen was trying to evolve from The Beetle Company to something more, the Type III was developed to go gunning for the mainstream. VW's Brazilian division was essentially it's own little fiefdom; with the market closed to imports and only Karmann Ghias to offer as sports cars. Even the spiffy and rare Type III Ghia was no longer too impressive by 1971. Division head Rudolf Leiding saw the need for a newer sports car and pushed through Project X, which used the Type III underpinnings and placed an attractive and modern coupe body atop the floorpan. Leiding was called back to run Volkswagen proper, but his modern coupe saw some success, and around 10,000 were produced making VW fans worldwide envious of the Brazilian market.

With the revival of the Scirocco, it seems only natural that interest in other sporty 1970's VWs would be piqued. Designer Marcelo Rosa has whipped up an updated vision of what a new SP2 might look like, and we like it. The idea is much like the upcoming Camaro – paying homage to the past without going completely retro. Some of the detailing is a little slavishly accurate and wouldn't fit with where VW's current style direction is going, but there's always room for a vehicle that pulls on the heartstrings; this is the company that makes the New Beetle, after all.

Infiniti working on four-door GT-R

Infiniti working on four-door GT-R

We've heard this particular rumor before, but despite Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn's denials that a four-door GT-R is in the works, AutoExpress cracks open the taps once more, citing its usual "sources in Japan." But there's a twist.

According to the British rumormongers, the Infiniti-badged GT-R will be stretched to accommodate the extra set of doors, making the wheelbase longer and giving it a more comfortable ride. However, the GT-R's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 won't be used. Instead, the FX50's 5.0-liter V8 will be mated to the same all-wheel-drive system and rear-mounted twin-clutch gearbox as its Nissan counterpart. Output is pegged at 420 hp with a 0-60 time of five seconds and a top speed of 170 mph.

While we're suitably skeptical about any mention of a four-door GT-R, this could be the long-rumored replacement for Infiniti's Q, taking the fight to the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63.

BMW to sell engines to Mercedes, others

BMW to sell engines to Mercedes

BMW, the Munich-based German automaker, is reportedly in discussion with other automakers -- rivals in some cases -- to sell their engines and transmissions. Klaus Draeger, BMW's head of development, told Auto Motor und Sport that the automaker is in advanced talks with Mercedes-Benz about licensing engines to its Stuttgart-based competitor.

Specifics have not been announced, but one likely candidate would be BMW's new V-12, set to debut in the new 7 Series and baby Rolls-Royce sedan. Mercedes would drop it under the hood of their flagship S-Class and Maybach. There was no mention about the possibility of BMW's twin-turbo inline-six finding itself under the hood of a Mercedes (while BMW continues to refine their award-winning inline-six powerplant, Mercedes dropped their popular straight-six in the mid-1990's and replaced it with a V6), but Draeger did hint that other automakers have approached the company about diesel engine technology. Engine and transmission sharing isn't uncommon in the industry, but such a move would be a first for the two companies, each longstanding rivals with products selling in the identical segments.
